UNDERSTANDING VALENTINE'S DAY:
Beloved brethren, today I had the privilege of watching the youth in our church, busy preparing for Valentine’s Day Special Seminar, coming up on Friday 14th Friday.
As I watched them, I was secretly wondering whether they know the whole story behind Valentine’s Day.
Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Roman Catholic priest who was martyred on February 14th AD 269.
There are a few different stories about who this Valentine was and why he was martyred.
The most popular story is that he secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war, thereby defying an order from Emperor Claudius II.
Claudius had banned marriages for young soldiers because he believed that single men made better fighters.
Valentine was eventually caught and imprisoned, and he was executed on February 14th.
While in prison, he is said to have befriended the jailer's daughter and written her a letter signed:
"From Your Valentine."
This is said to be the origin of the Valentine's Day card, and eventually The Valentine’s Day.
Over time, Valentine's Day has become a day for people to express their love and affection for each other.
It is a popular day for couples to exchange gifts, cards, and flowers.
It is also a popular day for people to propose marriage.
What are you doing This Valentine?
Karibu Kitengela.
