HUMAN WITHOUT HUMANITY:
Beloved brethren, today I heard a statement that left me thinking.
The preacher said:
"We are all human beings, but few people are human"
As I meditated on that statement, I broke it down as follows.
1. "We are all human beings..."
This acknowledges the biological reality.
We are all part of the same species, sharing the same basic anatomy and genetic makeup.
2. "...but few people are human."
This is where the deeper meaning lies. It suggests that:
"Human" in this context refers to a set of ethical, moral, and compassionate qualities.
These qualities include empathy, kindness, love, integrity, respect, dignity, tolerance, acceptance, justice, fairness etc.
While all of us possess the potential for these qualities, many people fail to consistently demonstrate them in their thoughts, words and actions.
It is possible to exist as a human being and fail to embrace a humane lifestyle.
True "humanity" is not an automatic trait.
True humanity is something that must be cultivated, nurtured and actively practiced.
May we all receive Grace to practice humanity anywhere we find ourselves.
